Kahului & Wailuku

Wailuku is old Maui but shopping tends to stay very up-to-date everywhere. You'll find some interesting places to explore here. Kahului is new Maui and it's hard to keep up with the changes in shops and their offerings. New malls keep opening and the older ones remake themselves. Good hunting.

Island-Wide

Do you dream of owning your piece of the paradise pie. It is a buyer's market and Maui beckons you. Make the drive to Hana a lazy Sunday afternoon activity, watch the sunrise on Haleakula once a month, see the whales jumping on your way to work. Make Maui your life. Hawaii Life has the entire Maui MLS, great photos of properties and fast search tools.

Market Street

If you like antiquing, this is the place to look. Interesting galleries and resale shops make Market street worth a walk. Try Bird of Paradise Unique Antiques for Hawaiian nostalgia in furniture, china, pottery and glass. Brown-Kobayashi have a treasure trove of Asian antiques.

Market Street

Downtown Wailuku is still a work in process, moving from the olden days to full gentrification. There are a couple of good Thai restaurants, too

Ka'ahumanu Center

Ka'ahumanu Center

These striking fabric wings form a canopy over Maui's biggest shopping mall with almost 100 shops and restaurants. There is a 6 screen theater complex and an international food court. All kinds of community events are held in the court.

You'll find mall standards like The Gap, Radio Shack, J.C.Penney, Sears, Disney, Waldenbooks, Shirokiya, Caswell-Massey and Liberty House. Then there are art, gift, jewelry and clothing boutiques plus

Right at the entrance you'll find Maui Hands. Local artists and crafts people (170 of them) offer elegant and sophisticated paintings, jewelry, graphics, sculpture and woodwork at reasonable prices.

Kahului Shopping Center

Maui's first shopping center is still a favorite for local retirees who hang out under the trees, play cards and gossip. Ah Fooks Market is still the place to find interesting ethnic foods and tropical produce. The Wednesday Farmer's Market is a great place to buy fresh produce and pick up a gift from a local craftsperson.

Maui Mall

Maui Mall

This quiet and comfortable mall has been overshadowed by the two newbies. Anchored by Longs Drugs and Star Market, it's still a favorite of ours for easy access and good buys.

Paper Airplane Museum

There are some surprises here, too. Look in the west wing for the Paper Airplane Museum. The Tin Can Man makes airplanes and other oddments from recycled soda cans as you watch. Buy a kit and try it yourself or just wander and wonder at his collection of paper airplane kits.

Maui Swap Meet in Kahului

Big box retailers like Eagle, Office Max and Borders moved into this strip mall near the airport and the center of shopping gravity shifted over this way. If you want to feel like you're back home, drop in.

Maui Swap Meet

On Saturday, over 100 booths line up to offer local baked goods, ethnic foods, local fruits and vegetables, resale goods and household items. Fresh tropical flowers, fruits and vegetables at low prices.
